Equine anaesthesia, the theme of the may 09 seminars
Once again, World Horse Welfare was pleased with attendance figures at
the latest set of Project Romania veterinary seminars seminars, with
over 150 students and over 20 practitioners present throughout the
week. Feedback on the sessions was also very positive, with both
students and practitioners finding the interactive nature of the
sessions very effective.
The May 2009 seminars were held at the Veterinary Schools in Iasi, Cluj and Bucharest, on the topic of equine anaesthesia: theory and practical demonstration. The Cluj Veterinary School was also the venue that hosted the two day practitioners seminar. For the students, World Horse Welfare has organised a one day seminar, one in each of the three schools.
For the practitioners’ seminars, World Horse Welfare brings some of the world’s leading equine surgeons to Romania. These seminars are aimed especially at vets working with horses on a daily basis and practitioners from all over the country gathered this year in Cluj to attend. This time, the practitioners were able to watch the guest speakers perform live castrations using different anaesthesia techniques. The practical demonstrations allow the participants to apply what they learnt in the classroom and to interact with the speakers and get hands on advice and knowledge.
For the student seminars, World Horse Welfare brings young and dynamic vets to Romania, with experience in equine medicine, welfare and teaching. During a one day intensive training, the students learn both theory and practice and get to interact with the speakers during several Q&A sessions. The students are encouraged to set up equine working groups, to spread the
word about horse welfare throughout the school and become more involved in any issues concerning the wellbeing of the Romanian horse.
The purpose of the twice-yearly Project Romania veterinary seminars is to provide specialist equine veterinary expertise to students, as well as practitioners. Every year since the start of the Project in 2006, the seminars, which are held at the Vet Schools across the country, have focused on several major equine themes:
- 2006: Colic and Lameness
- 2007: Gastrointestinal disease and Orthopedics
- 2008: Orthopedics and Cardiovascular and respiratory disease
The themes of the seminars are selected after discussing the needs of the students and practitioners with various vets, students and representatives of the Veterinary faculties in Romania.
