Project Romania looks to the future with Embassy Event
Project Romania received a much needed boost when the British
Ambassador for Romania, Robin Barnett, kindly hosted a reception for
World Horse Welfare at his residence in Bucharest on 12 June. Attended
by 62 guests including the Secretary of State for Agriculture, senior
Government officials, vets, farriers, media, charities, sporting
organisations, celebrities and business entrepreneurs, the event set
out to sign-up support to help Romania’s horses. In year four of the
five year programme, World Horse Welfare is determined to leave a
lasting legacy.
The Ambassador said: "I was very pleased to host the reception dedicated to the future of horse welfare in Romania. The impressive attendance demonstrated the importance that many Romanians attach to this issue.
I want to applaud World Horse Welfare's commitment to the development of horse welfare here through their five-year programme, Project Romania. I very much hope that Romania builds on this excellent foundation and develops a long term strategy to ensure the well-being of horses here."
Chairman, Christopher Hall, commented: “This event was a great success, it is essential that we work with Romania to ensure that World Horse Welfare’s work lives on. There are still many on-going welfare issues that need to be addressed, from the horses destined for slaughter in Italy, the conditions of the national studs, through to the working horses suffering severe lameness due to a lack of foot care. This reception provided a fantastic opportunity to sign up long-term support to help secure a positive future for Romania’s horses.”
World Horse Welfare will be working in-country with key stakeholders to develop a ten year horse welfare strategy that can be implemented by Romania, as they take the reins of Project Romania at the end of 2010.
