World Horse Welfare responds to the situation in the Danube Delta
A World Horse Welfare spokesperson said “We are aware of, and
extremely concerned about, the situation in the Danube Delta and are
monitoring it closely. We have been informed of a number of very
serious welfare problems that have occurred regarding the way in which
these feral horses, adults and foals, are being rounded up and
transported for slaughter. There are also concerns regarding the
legality of the methods being used.
“World Horse Welfare has been working in Romania since 2004, and ran
an educational project from 2006 to 2010; it was through this that we
built-up a strong contact base. We have been liaising closely with these
contacts – which include vets, welfare organisations and horse lovers
involved with efforts to assist these horses. We have offered advice and
support on the course of action that can be taken regarding the
non-compliance with the current transport Regulation.
“In addition, we have been trying to get in touch with the Romanian
State Veterinary Service and other agencies to see how these welfare
issues can be tackled. We have made the relevant authorities such as
the European Commission aware of our concerns.
“We welcome the news that the State Veterinary Service is taking
action to investigate this situation, but were extremely disappointed
that this welfare abuse was allowed to occur in the first place. These
horses should not have been allowed to suffer in this way. We will
continue to monitor the situation closely and apply pressure on those
who have the power to prevent this from happening again.”

For almost a century, World Horse Welfare has given abused and neglected horses a second chance in life, at home and overseas. Formerly the ILPH, today we work tirelessly alongside our supporters, turning their passion for horses into the power to help countless more live happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives. We do this by stamping out suffering, campaigning for improved treatment, and teaching owners how to provide their horses with better care. Because it’s only together that we’ll be able to give horses the welfare - and the world - they deserve.
We have been active in Romania since 2006, in support of the country's
working horse population. Our activity in Romania is greatly supported
by the country's passion for horses and the people's eagerness to learn
more and better themselves. During our seminars and training courses,
we have met many veterinarians and horse owners. Their enthusiasm and
willingness to be involved has promoted our work in Romania and helped
us tailor our activities to the specific needs of each group.
The purpose of this website is to promote horse welfare by providing
information to professionals as well as to the general public. Here you
will find out more about our work, you will be able to access
veterinary presentations, short training films in saddlery and
farriery, and see photos of our work in Romania.
